Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo is at this hour preparing for a grilling session with the parliamentary committee on education over the teachers’ strike. The MPs want Mutula to explain what the government is intending to do over the standoff that has kept schools shut for three weeks now. The Cabinet yesterday asked teachers to go back to work or risk being fired after they rejected the 13. 4 billion shillings pay offer by the government. KNUT officials have maintained that teachers should be paid the 300% salary increment promised to them in 1997. They however said that they are studying the recent proposal made by the government to have the teachers salaries harmonized with those of other public servants, as well as the proposed promotion of some 8,000 teachers from grade p2 to p1 . This would therefore mean that their salaries would be raised from 13,750 shillings to 19,000 shillings. In the meantime, the Wilson Sossion Team maintains that the strike is still on. This term’s schools calendar was to run from the 3rd of September for a period of 8 weeks but following the teachers strike, the government has extended the time to allow pupils to recover lost time. It is however not clear if the National exam dates will remain fixed.

    Mutula didn’t see …
Mutula didn’t see this coming? After he refused to tow the PNU line while at the Ministry for Justice, he was bound to be thrown to the wolves. Ministry of Finance and parliament will not allow him to give the teachers a salary increase even if he supported it (the same parliamentarians who keep giving themselves perks and raises whenever the direction in which the wind is blowing changes). Anyang Nyongo is also being prepared for the vultures as the Medical Services sector is also awash!
