In 1996 I was convicted of a class X felony, I was going to Join the Marines to get my record expunged and my gun rights back, but someone told me that I just have to write the senate and ask to be expunged. Is this true? I need some good advice before I sign my life away. Someone please help me.

NOW THIS IS A GOOD QUESTION! REALLY JAS

You need to talk to a lawyer there in Illinois. Almost any advice you get here is pure speculation if not outright BS.

Wow…do some of you just pull crap out your azz. The only way to restore your gun rights in Illinois is by a Governor’s pardon with authorization to expunge. The Illinois State Police have a restoration method by applying with them 20 yrs after the conviction or going in front of the county court judge where you were convicted……even if they granted you your firearm rights back, you still cannot own any because you will be in violation of federal law still. Your only way is a governors pardon with expungement.
