Back in the day, I made a few dumb mistakes that I am not paying for. It was back in 89 when I was convicted of a felon. I was caught with marijuana. It was enough to make it a felony. What do I have to do to get my gun rights restored? I just want to own a shotgun for hunting.

The restoration of rights in Virginia restores the rights to vote, to run for and hold public office, to serve on juries and to serve as a notary public. It does not include the right to possess or transport any firearm or to carry a concealed weapon

Once a felon always a felon. Once you’re a felon there’s no getting a gun. Take up bow hunting.

As long as the felony was not federal and you were charged and convicted in state court and you have no convictions for domestic violence then getting your firearm rights restored is very possible. I just did it.

First you must have the governor restore your civil rights (right to vote, sit on a jury, hold public office, and become a notary public). As long as the document does not expressly prohibit your right to own a firearm (the document will say that it is not restoring firearm rights, the Governor never does that) then you will want a lawyer to write a motion to the circuit court to ask the judge to grant your petition to have your firearm rights restored.

The process is not as bleak as some might lead you to believe. Read this link http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Restoration.shtm

    Good luck.
