Most progressive nations such as those in Europe have free speech but don’t allow hate speech. Free speech should NOT cover hateful and extremely antogonistic speech in any civilized modern society. Is this just an excuse the right-wingers like to use to justify the spreading of hate and lies?

What in the Constitution or any Supreme Court case has ever said that free speech doesn’t include hate speech?

An amendment to protect friendly speech would seem pretty silly though.

And let me guess…. You think that left-wing moon-bats, like yourself, should be the ones to determine what meets your criteria of "hate speech", right?

While I cannot engage in speech that incites violence, I have every right to say that I hate you. In fact, if I met you, I probably would hate your guts. And it’s legal for me to say that. See how that works?

Actually, the US is quite unique with its First Amendment. Most countries do not have a constitution that guarantees free speech or freedom of religion. You don’t know what you are talking about, dude. The framers were smart enough to build a federal government on negative rights. Liberals hate this.

Numerous college campuses have attempted to enact a hate speech policies. Which always fails due to the intervention of the courts. In actuality, hate speech codes are censorship through the lens of political correctness. For example, the university I attended for four years had a large number of socialists and USA-hating anarchists as guest speakers. Never during the time I was there was there any speaker who could be classified either politically moderate or politically to the right. Several attempts to invite such individuals always resulted in the faculty -along with many students- screaming about ‘hate speech’.

Free speech is great, but only so long it passes the appropriate political litmus test. Otherwise such speech is hate speech, and needs to be controlled and regulated.

Not only conservatives believe that free speech includes hate speech. The ACLU (hated by most conservatives) consistently fights for the free-speech rights of hate groups.

Why? Because in America, it is believed that diminishing the rights of one person diminshes the rights of us all. I agree with this. So how do you counter hate speech? With MORE speech! Speak out against what you disagree with, don’t ban it.

When you start limiting free speech, it’s a tricky business. Everyone find different things offensive. Should a person go to jail for calling another "fatass", for example? It’s hateful, and rude, but it doesn’t rise to level of a crime, in my opinion.

Europe has a much different history than the U.S….remember, America was founded by people trying to get away from repressive laws in Europe.

It is most certainly included in the 1st Amendment, as no one has the right to declare if something is hate speech or not.
